What Is Dog Deshedding, and Does It Work?

If your home is covered in dog hair, you've probably wondered whether a de-shedding treatment helps. It can reduce the amount of loose hair, but it can't stop shedding completely. Here is what to know.

What de-shedding means

Many dogs, especially those with thick or double coats, have a layer of soft undercoat that sheds naturally. A de-shedding treatment focuses on loosening and removing that loose undercoat during the bath and brush-out, so there is less hair left to fall out around your home.

Which dogs benefit most

Double-coated and heavy-shedding breeds benefit most, but any dog that leaves a lot of hair behind can be a candidate. Shedding often increases around seasonal changes.

What it won't do

  • It won't stop shedding altogether. Shedding is natural.
  • It isn't a substitute for brushing at home between visits.
  • It can't fix shedding caused by a health problem. If shedding suddenly changes, talk to your veterinarian.

Getting the best results

  • Brush your dog regularly between appointments.
  • Tell your groomer how much your dog sheds and in which areas.
  • Book de-shedding ahead of heavy shedding seasons if you can.
